The goal of every day of your life is to gradually grow stronger inside, so that less and less of the outside affects your inner health without your conscious consent.
Truth be told, how you deal with unexpected problems and frustrations can be the difference between a good life and an unhealthy one. For example, if you choose unhealthy coping mechanisms such as avoidance or denial, you can quickly turn a difficult situation into a tragic one. And unfortunately, this is a common mistake that many people make.
When you are faced with a disappointing reality, your first reaction may be to Deny the situation or avoid dealing with it altogether. But in doing so, you inadvertently hold on even tighter to the pain you want to let go of—in fact, you keep it locked inside you.
Let’s imagine that someone close to you is sick, and it is very painful to support this person through his illness. You may not want to deal with pain, so you can cope by finding ways to numb yourself by avoiding it, drinking alcohol, and eating unhealthy foods. As a result, you become physically ill as the pain continues to rise within you.
Obviously that’s not good.
If you notice yourself doing something similar, it’s time to pause Our books) will help open your mind.
When you face struggles with an open mind—open to the painful feelings and emotions you have—you’ll discover that it’s not comfortable, but you can still get better, you can still move forward. Transparency means you don’t immediately decide that you know this only It can be a scary experience – you admit that you really don’t know what the next step will be, and you want to understand the whole truth of the matter. It’s a learning stance, instead assuming the worst.
Benefits of healthy coping
It’s certainly not an easy process to tackle, and I’m not suggesting it is. All I can recommend is that it’s worth your time. In practice, healthy coping allows you to find better ways to manage life’s constant stream of unexpected and uncontrollable situations. For example…
- A task is harder than you expected – Instead of running away from a difficult and overwhelming task, you can accept it, face the discomfort and stress, and take action anyway. For example, writing a book is scary and overwhelming, but even when those feelings are rolling in you (like Mark and I did with our books) you can still write one..
- Communicating with Someone You Love Makes You Angry or Frustrated – Instead of lashing out at a loved one when you’re upset, you can sit quietly with your difficult feelings and open up about how you feel about them. Then, once you’ve had some time to breathe, you can see what it feels like to be kind to someone you love. Try to understand them instead of judging them badly.
- Unhealthy cravings overwhelm you out of nowhere – When you’re feeling stressed you may want to indulge in unhealthy cravings like alcohol and sweets for comfort. But if you sit with these feelings and be open to them instead, you can then gradually create positive daily rituals for coping in healthy ways – walking, meditating, talking to someone about your feelings, journaling, reviewing relevant quotes from our book presented in this post, etc.
- You are forced to deal with the death of a loved one – if someone you love dies, grief and a sense of loss will be overwhelming. At that point, it’s incredibly easy to give into unhealthy, “quick-fix” ways to relieve pain. But you have to force yourself to do the opposite – give yourself compassion, sit with the powerful difficult thoughts and feelings you have, and open your mind. It gradually becomes apparent that death is not only an end but also a beginning. Because you’ve lost someone special, and like all losses this ending is a reinvention. Although deeply sad, their passing forces you to rebuild your life, and in this reinvention is an opportunity to experience beauty in new, unseen ways and places.
Of course, we’ve only scratched the surface of the endless possibilities for healthy coping. The key thing to understand is that by learning to cope in healthy ways, you’ll find that you’ll be better able to handle anything life throws your way. Come out stronger and sometimes happier than you were before.
Ultimately, the world is what you are inside. What you think, you see, ultimately you become. So gather your thoughts wisely – think about how you want to live today and use these quotes to guide you:
